2024-25 Winner
The 24/25 Drennan Cup season was an exceptional one with 2 new British Records and a third which is just awaiting acceptance. There were also many new faces who entered and received a new Drennan Cup cap & badge, but the votes have now been counted, and we can finally reveal the winner of the 24/25 Drennan Cup is ………… Steve Ricketts!!!
Steve is no stranger to the Drennan Cup, managing to have his name etched into the history books back during the 12/13 season as he finished runner-up to Gareth Goldson with eel catches of 7lb 10oz, 9lb 13oz, 6lb 14oz and 5lb 13oz. Whilst Steve only managed 1 award during the 24/25 season, what an award it was! A British Record 11lb 3oz eel which beat Steve Terry’s record that had stood since 1978.
Along with having his name engraved once again on what is regarded as the biggest cup in specimen fishing, Steve also bags himself £2000!

2024-25 Runner Up
This year’s Drennan Cup runner up was Stephen Gibbons who landed himself a record 9 weekly awards, the most any single angler has ever been awarded!
Stephens’s weekly awards included an 11lb 14oz tench, 6lb 3oz eel, rudd of 3lb 5oz and 3lb 9oz, river roach of 2lb 8oz 8dr and 2lb 10oz, a 3lb 2oz grayling, a stillwater 3lb 4oz roach and then a Dorset Stour 7lb 15oz chub
He told us “I would like to say congratulations to Steve – to see an eel of that magnitude is mind boggling and I have the upmost respect for anglers who catch them. As it happens, the highlight of my season was catching a 6lb 3oz eel, and nothing could beat that feeling of sharing it with my good friend Jack Sales. It’s an honour to finish second and have such a great season, in which I couldn’t do much more! Thank you to Drennan for running the event along with all at the Angling Times. Also, congratulations to all the anglers who caught some magnificent fish this season.”

2024-25 Third Place
Taking third place in this year’s Drennan Cup is Neale Woodward who managed 7 weekly awards.
Neale started off in early May and earned his first weekly award for a 16lb 4oz bream which was soon followed by an 11b 2oz tench from a Kent gravel pit.
Next up was barbel on the mighty Kings Weir stretch of the River Lea as he landed a 17lb 2oz specimen. Neale then headed over to the River Thames where he landed another barbel of 17lb 4oz for his 4th weekly award.
A 3lb 1oz grayling from the River Frome earned Neale his 5th award, followed by a 3lb 10oz roach from an Oxfordshire stillwater. After that he turned his attention to chub, targeting them on several rivers, but his efforts came good in the final weeks of the season, with a fish of 7lb 11oz on trotting tactics from the River Lea.

2024-25 Fourth Place
Taking fourth place in this year’s Drennan Cup is previous 2-time winner Dai Gribble who managed 3 weekly awards during the 24/25 season and earns himself £500.
It wasn’t a simple 3 awards for Dai as his season got off to a flying start when he headed over to Linear Fisheries and landed himself a British Record-equalling roach of 4lb 3oz!
He didn’t stop there as just a few months later he picked up his second weekly award for a tench weighing 11lb exactly. Amazingly, it was his 60th double-figure tench! That fish was caught from a Kent stillwater, soon to be followed by a fin-perfect 11lb 13oz tench from Staffordshire’s Copmere. At the time Dai said that, in his opinion, the latter fish was equal to a 13-pounder from a southern gravel pit, because it’s his first-ever ‘double’ from the venue, which he’s fished since way back in 1981!This will be the third time Dai had his name engraved onto the most prestigious cup in specimen fishing!
